Existen diferentes tipos de mezcla de audio, entre las más modernas existe el audio surround (Rigs, 1995; Ranada, 1996) y las holofonías (Nocetti, 2014), para explicar esto hay que pasar por los otros tipos de mezcla existentes, partiendo del sonido mono (Difere, s.f.), pasando por el stereo hasta llegar a los formatos actuales como multicanal (Euronics, s.f.).
El sonido mono corresponde al sonido proveniente de una sola fuente sonora, como pueden ser, por ejemplo, las radios antiguas o los amplificadores de instrumentos; el sonido stereo corresponde al sonido proveniete de dos fuentes sonoras, como pueden ser los equipos de música, los parlantes integrados a los televisores o los audifonos; mientras que un sistema de sonido surrond o multicanal corresponde a un sistema de varios canales, generalmente cinco fuentes sonoras distribuidas en una sala, como en un cine. Las holofonías, sonido 3D o sonido 8D son un tipo de mezcla stereo que simula ser una mezcla surround, pero que está hecha para ser escuchada con audífonos.

There are different types of audio mix, among the most modern there is surround audio (Rigs, 1995; Ranada, 1996; HyperPhysics, n.d.) and holophonies (Nocetti, 2014) to explain this we must go through the other types of existing mix, starting with the mono sound (Difere, 2014), going through the stereo to reach the current formats as multichannel (Euronics, n.d.).
The mono sound corresponds to a sound from a single sound source, such as, for example, old radios or instrument amplifiers; the stereo sound corresponds to the sound coming from two sound sources, such as music equipment, speakers integrated to televisions or headphones; while a surrond or multichannel sound system corresponds to a many channels on a system, generally five sound sources distributed in a room, such as in a cinema. Holophonies, 3D sound or 8D sound is a type of stereo mix that simulates a surround mix, but is made to be heard with headphones.
