Una de las especies que convivió mucho tiempo con los humanos modernos u Homo sapiens, fue el Homo neanderthalensis u hombre de Neandertal, estos existieron en Europa aproximadamente hace 400.000 y 35.000 años (Tristán, 2007; Gutiérrez, 2007). Para responder a la pregunta de si los integrantes de esta especie eran capaces de comunicarse con un lenguaje articulado, tal y como lo hacen las personas en la actualidad, existen estudios realizados por genetistas en los que se encontró el FOXP2, un gen y una proteína del mismo nombre responsable del lenguaje (Krause et al, 2007; Aznarez Torralvo, 2008; Benitez-Burraco y Longa, 2011; POLIGLOSIA, 2015). Antes del descubrimiento de este gen, las hipótesis dadas por científicos como Steven Mithen en su obra The Singing Neanderthals, decían que esta especie se comunicaba a través de gruñidos, pero en la actualidad, gracias al trabajo de investigadores como Carles Lalueza-Fox en El Sidrón, uno de los yacimientos neandertales más relevantes del mundo, ya se puede asegurar que tenían una forma de comunicación similar a la de los humanos modernos. Hay que tener en cuenta, que las principales características que hacen posible el habla en los humanos modernos son el gen FOXP2 y el aparato fonoarticulatorio, ambos encontrados tanto en neandertales como en humanos modernos.

Before the discovery of this gene, the hypotheses given by scientists like Steven Mithen in his work The Singing Neanderthals, said that this species communicated through grunts, but today, thanks to the work of researchers like Carles Lalueza-Fox in El Sidrón, one of the most important neanderthal sites in the world, can already be assured that they had a form of communication similar to that of modern humans. Keep in mind that the main features that make speech possible in modern humans are the FOXP2 gene and the phonoarticulatory apparatus, both found in both Neanderthals and modern humans.
